First encountered it in the 80's and was so pleased to find a book that used mathematical, statistical and computerised methods instead of folklore. The emphasis is on finding value in sporting contests. Using one of its observations on football matches, my friend and I placed 25p each on a Yankee -- and won a hundred quid!
